Buddhist Sum Heung Lam Memorial College

Buddhist Sum Heung Lam Memorial College is one of the oldest college in the Tuen Mun district. At the same time, the school is facing the challenge of government reducing the financial support for schools and school sponsoring groups. In addition, half of the students are under the CSSA or government funding for their families. They are unable to afford to purchase extra-curricular books.

In line with the diversified new learning mode of the 21st century, Ten Percent Donation Scheme Foundation has donated to optimize the 40 years library and support the learning needs of grassroots students this year. It creates an inspiring, sustainable and “student-oriented” diversify the learning space to build student knowledge, enhance self-learning, common abilities and information literacy, establish correct values and attitudes, cultivate a wide reading habit, lay a solid foundation for their lifelong learning, and assist the next generation to accept under high-quality facilities. Education has become the pillar of the future.

Sprout of Life Program – The Boys’& Girls’ Clubs Association Hong Kong

In recent years, the number of children with Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) has been rising in Hong Kong. Their social skills and self-management skills are weak. They always feel powerless when they encounter difficulties in their daily life, and parents need to spend a lot of time in their education. It will affect family relationships and children’s development when they live in a negative emotions for a long time.

However, if students do not have a formal diagnosis report, school and organizations could not provide support or treatment for them. The waiting time of treatment in public clinic is long, and the fees charged by the private clinic is very expensive. It would be difficult for low-income families to afford, and causes treatment delay for the children. In view of this, we hopes to intervene early and provide appropriate support to students with special learning needs, and explore their potential.

In 2018-19, we sponsored 25 students, who are in financial difficulties and suspected AD/HD cases, to referral psychiatrists for a special diagnostic assessment. This program also held different courses, such as sports groups, sensory integration treatment groups, social groups and inclusive activities, to improve their social skills and self-management skills. We hope that they can grow up in a healthy environment and obtain a better develop opportunities.

Food Rescue And Food Assistance Program

Food Angel is a food rescue and food assistance program launched in 2011 by Bo Charity Foundation with the mission of “WASTE NOT, HUNGER NOT, WITH LOVE” . The program rescues edible surplus food from different sectors of the food industry that would otherwise be disposed of as waste. Following strict safety protocols, the rescued food items are then prepared as nutritious hot meals and redistributed free of charge to the underprivileged communities in Hong Kong.

There are currently two kitchens, one operating in Sham Shui Po and the other in Chai Wan, together producing around 6,000 hot meals and 1,500 food packs daily. The beneficiaries are mostly deprived elderly, followed by low-income families, unemployed persons, the disabled and people in rehabilitation, the homeless, caged home dwellers and disadvantaged groups.

In the 2017-2018 academic year, Ten Percent Donation Scheme will collaborate with Food Angel to provide food support for students in our after-school programs. Through this collaboration, food waste can be reduced while children receive additional assistance and learn to cherish food.

Buddhist Wong Wan Tin College

Robofest World Championship 2018 & Odyssey of the Mind 2018
For the purpose of inspiring students to reach their greatest potential, Buddhist Wong Wan Tin College provide opportunities to students to take part in extra-curricular activities and competitions in different domains. Over the years, their students have achieved impressive results in Robotic Competitions and the Odyssey of the Mind Hong Kong Regional Tournament. This year, they have 22 students of Robotic Team and Odyssey of the Mind Club, were qualified to represent Hong Kong to participate in Robofest World Championship 2018 and 2018 Odyssey of the Mind in the United States. However, most of the students are come from low-income families, and the costs of participating the competitions in U.S were imposed their family burdens. In light of this, Ten Percent Donation Scheme Foundation donated HK$50,000 to support the cost of their competition.

Lastly, the students did not disappoint us. They won the First Runner-up Prize in the “Odyssey of the Mind 2018 World Finals”, and the Champion (Advanced Group) in the “Robofest 2018 World Championship”, which bringing the honor to Hong Kong. We hope the students could realize their potential with this opportunity, able to meet people from all over the world, broaden their horizons and stimulate their interest in STEM.  Also, apply the knowledge and skills on their studies or work, and contribute to the society in the future.

Ten Percent Donation Scheme Foundation continues our support and donates HK$50,000 for the “Run for Brightness 2017 cum Primary School Scholastic Athletics
Championships” which was held by Hong Kong Blind Sports Federation (HKBSF) on 25 March.
Our volunteers participated in the run with the visually impaired runners and their guide runners in the event. The run inspired the spirit of helping each other and we
finished with joy.
HKBSF has been actively promoting the public awareness of the importance of sports development for the visually impaired athlete. Their athletes have won different
awards in a number of international and local sports events frequently. The Federation also arranges their athletes to visit different schools and corporates, and
conduct seminars to deliver the message of “Overcome Adversity” to the youths.
Our Foundation shares the vision with HKBSF in encouraging students to overcome difficult situations and using education to alleviate poverty, which coincides with our Foundation’s objective – “Help Others Help Ourselves”.

MPR Read and Fun

Donated Amount: HK$ 99,200

The disparity between the poor and the rich in Hong Kong is among the worst compared to other major cities globally, with a quarter of the children’s population (about 200,000 children) living under the poverty line. Unlike many families, parents of these grass-roots children often lack knowledge, money and time to enroll their children in tutoring lessons or extracurricular activities. Impoverishment have deprived them of many learning opportunities, making it even harder for them to be rid of poverty.

Our Foundation donated 100 sets of MPR Read and Fun Starter kits to three social welfare organizations: Hong Kong New Arrivals Services Foundation Activity Center, West Kowloon Community Rescue Service Center and Kwun Tong Sau Mau Ping Community Service Center, hoping to help children who are new arrivals, children from low-income families or families receiving government subsidies to adapt to new environment and master new language.

The read-aloud function of the reading pen is an interactive way for students to improve their listening and oral skills while reading, and at the same time boost their interest in reading and self-learning. The MPR kits provide another way for under-privileged children to have fair learning opportunities which can help them build a brighter future.

Since the beginning of January 2008, many provinces in Central and Southern China, including Hunan, Hubei, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Anhui, Sichuan, Guangxi, Yunnan, Zhejiang, Xinjiang etc, were hit by snowstorm. A lot of workers and travelers were stuck as roads, railways and ports were all shutdown. People living in the rural areas were even hard hit as they did not have the resources to prepare for such harsh weather.

We would like to show our hands to the victims and thus, we responded to the appeal by the Hong Kong Red Cross and donated HK$200,000 in support of their relief work in the affected areas.

An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale has struck Yushu County, Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province on 14 April 2010. This powerful earthquake has led to death of at least 2,698 people, over 270 people missing, and 12,135 people injured. Power outage happened in the affected areas. Since houses in the areas were only built using only wood and mud, almost all houses were demolished, and the victims lost their home as well as their loved ones. As the earthquake happened during school time, many schools were torn down and students were buried.

We felt deeply moved by the disaster. We donated HK$200,000 to the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR – Special A/C for Disaster Relief in support of the victims in Qinghai. Disaster relief such as medical assistance, food, water, clothes, sleeping bags etc were provided to the victims. The donation was also used in the disaster recovery in the region.

11th of March, 2011, a day that no Japanese can ever forget. On this day, the Northeast region of Japan experienced the most powerful earthquake in the modern era. All of us living in Hong Kong may not understand how terrible an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 on the Richter scale is. However, the numbers below can give you a better view of the scale of this disaster.

The earthquake led to at least 15,875 deaths, 2,725 people were reported missing. Over 26,992 people were injured, and 1,168,453 buildings were damaged. This was the most dreadful natural disaster the country faced after World War II. The earthquake also triggered up to 7.3 meters tsunami, which in turn caused series of fire and nuclear leakage. The affected areas came to a halt. Many cities along the shore were even leveled by the tsanami.

In view of the disaster, we immediately donated HK$100,000 to support the HK Red Cross in their work on disaster relief and rebuilding of the community.

In recent years, the phenomenon of overly strict and pushy “Monster Parents” or overly caring “Helicopter Parents” believed in “winning at the starting line” is becoming very common in Hong Kong.  However, many grassroots parents with lower education are employed in lower tier jobs. They need to spend a lot of time commuting to other districts, and often have long or irregular working hours.  Although the government and some NGOs provide after-school child care support services, they can only accommodate a certain number of children in limited service hours, and these services are inadequate to support the massive needs in the society.  Many low-income parents cannot get help, and have no time to take care of their children’s homework as well as their daily needs.  Children from these families are often left at home unattended, which leave them prone to home accidents, or hang out on the streets, playgrounds or internet café, etc., neglect their studies.  These less-fortunate children are “losing at the starting line”, leading to under-performance in their academic results and irresponsible behaviors.

In order to relieve inter-generational poverty and provide a better future to these less-fortunate children, Ten Percent Donation Scheme Foundation sponsored the After-School Care Support Programs in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon City, Hung Hom and Tin Shui Wai.  Unlike the standard one to two hours tutoring programs organized by the government or other NGOs, our programs provide after-school child care support from 5pm to 9pm.  Besides assisting students in their homework and serving dinners, various extra-curricular activities are regularly organized. Students can learn in a safe and good environment, which help them to build up the self-confidence and broaden their horizon.

In the year 2018-2019, our Foundation has supported 222 students in these programs.

Amongst the 18 districts in Hong Kong, the top five districts with the highest poverty rate are New Territories North, Sham Shui Po, Yuen Long, Kwai Tsing and Kwun Tong. In view of above situation, this program decided to work with the schools which inside these districts.  Students are assessed individually and based on their unique situation, group counselling sessions are arranged to cater for their special needs.

The idea of the tree saplings similar to this program – students as the saplings, donors as the soil, and our Foundation as the tree trunk.  In order for the students to grow healthily, they receive water and nutrition from the donors through the tree trunk (ie. our Foundation).

In this program, the students were those who lack of financial support and having the special study needs. These difficulties may lead them to under-performance in school, or appears other emotional, behavioral and communication problems, hindering the students’ development socially and emotionally in the long run.

Through this program, students not only improve the above problems, but receive assistance in both of their academic and non-academic areas, such as interpersonal skills, self-confidence, positive thinking, etc. Students are the pillars of our future, we hope that they could contribute to the society and spreading love to other people in the future.

Sprout of Life Program – CCC Yenching College

More than 50% of the students come from low income families in CCC Yenching College. Some of them have special learning deficiencies, who need for professional counselling, such as Autism, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or other emotional problems. Therefore, our Foundation sponsored CCC Yenching College, to held different learning programs for special education, which target to improve students reading and writing abilities, social skills, emotional management, language skills and muscle control abilities. These programs can help students overcome their shortcomings, enhance their social skills and learning abilities.

Students from low-income families often face financial difficulties and cannot afford the expensive university tuition fees. Although they have the ability academically to complete their university studies, they cannot fulfill their university dream and improve their lives with a higher education.

In order to help these students to succeed in their university lives, we have partnered with China Youth Development Foundation in setting up “Ten Percent Donation Fund” in support of the “College Dream project” under the name of Ten Percent Donation Scheme Foundation. Under this program, we sponsor students who come from families that are financially incapable to support their university studies. This program helps these students to fulfill their dream of attending university. We believe that knowledge can change lives. With our support, these students can start at the same line with the others, and can build a better future for themselves and the society.

It is very common for parents living in the rural areas of China to move to the cities in order to find better jobs. These parents spend a lot of time at work, and are willing to sacrifice valuable time with their children in return for hopefully better future for the families. As a result, children are often left alone at home without supervision, and their academic results are less than satisfactory.

Our Foundation has sponsored on the establishment of Ten Percent Hope Community in Lengquan Estate in the town of Northwest Wang,Haidian Region, Beijing. The Hope Community includes a community centre with multimedia and audio-visual equipment, library etc, providing various activities to these children who lack daily care and support from their parents. The community centre also provides a proper study environment for these children.

Besides, the community centre helps the children to overcome difficulties apart from schoolwork. For instance, the children may face financial and psychological problems. The centre provides various services such as counseling to the children so they find it easier to make the transition from the countryside to the cities, and help them to build their confidence.

Knowledge is essential in changing the lives of children. In order to provide equal learning opportunities to poor students in rural areas of China, we set up our first Ten Percent Hope School in Dabodi Estate in Yunnan Province.

People living in rural areas face many limitations which restrict their income growing capability. Children from these families often have financial difficulties, and cannot afford the boarding and meal charges. They also need to travel long distance from home to schools. As a result, a lot of students have to forfeit the chance of going to schools, and they have no chance to change their lives without the necessary knowledge from schools. The Hope School does not only offer a safe place with excellent teachers for students to learn, but also provides subsidies on meals and learning materials to children from low-income families, giving them an equal opportunity to build a brighter future.

The Boys’& Girls’ Clubs Association Hong Kong – Walk with Children Ten Percent Donation Scheme Foundation

This year, our Foundation has continued to cooperate with The Boy’s & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong, an organization which has been based in Shum Shui Po for more than 30 years, to implement the “Walk with Children” program.

This program targets the under-privileged families, particularly those with low-income, new arrivals from Mainland China, single parents or require Special Education Needs.  We hope to relieve parent’s pressure in taking care of their children, and provide learning opportunities or development to the students.

In 2018-2019, our Foundation has sponsored 45 students, which ranging from Primary 1 to Primary 6, through this program.  In addition to provide homework assistance and snacks, our volunteers will provide paired reading to the students. On weekdays, we will provide life sharing, attention improvement, team training, music, dance performances, and other interest groups to the students; during the holidays, we will arrange indoor or outdoor learning activities to them, so that they can have a more comprehensive development.

Moreover, this program will provide a full day care services during the summer holidays, and we will held parent’s gathering in every semester, a channel for them to share thoughts and feelings, so that we could improve the program and provide the best support to the students.

St. James’ Settlement – Teens’ Group (Tin Shui Wai)

Tin Shui Wai is known to be one of the poorest districts in Hong Kong. The number of households living under the poverty line increases every year. Apart from the ageing population, the poverty situation is still be severe.

Many parents in this district are low education level and low income, who mostly need to spend a lot of time commuting to other districts, and often have long or irregular working hours. Therefore, they cannot take care of their children. In order to reduce their burden, this program offers after-school care support to 60 students in Tin Shui Wai. The center runs till 9pm every day during the academic year, the tutor will provide assistant to the students, such as homework tutorial, various extra-curricular activities and dinner, which help them to enrich the life experiences and broaden their horizon.

Martha Boss Lutheran Community Centre – Ten Percent Childrenland

In 2018-2019, we sponsored 87 students, aged from 6 to 12, who live in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon City, Ho Man Tin and Hung Hom districts, and some of the students are South Asians and non-Chinese students.

  • To support children (mainly in age 6-12) to leave poverty through education; we work with other charity groups in supporting different projects.
  • To promote our belief of “Help others to help themselves”, spreading the love to the community through donations and rewarding our society.
  • To use nearly 100% of the donations on the relevant parties and other organizations in need. In order to minimize the administrative costs, the committee members for the organization are work on a voluntary basis.
  • To be the pioneer to spread love and care in the society, broadening the beneficiaries in the community.

How did our organization get started? A group of friends, who later became the committee members of the group, gathered in a dinner reunion and all of them wanted to be the one to treat. One of them finally came up with an interesting suggestion – all participants except the one who paid for the dinner, would donate 10% of the total bill amount for charity. This simple suggestion finally gathered the loving hearts of the founding members into the establishment of our organization.

Ten Percent Donation Scheme Foundation was established in 2007 to encourage the donations from the society. Our mission is to eliminate the pass of poverty onto next generations by subsidizing the education expenses of students in Hong Kong. We are a non-government organization (NGO) and are non-religious, non-political and non-profitable. We are also a charity recognized by Wise Giving (惠施).

Although Hong Kong is an affluent city, the poverty rate still continues to be rise. According to “Hong Kong Poverty Situation Report 2017”, the number of poor households in Hong Kong reached 590,000, the number of poor people reached 1.377 million, and the poverty rate accounted for 20.1%, which increase 0.2% over 2016. Among them, the poor population and poverty rate of children have risen, and the poverty rate has reached 17.5%. It shows that the problem of poverty is getting worse.

It reflects that low income families cannot afford sufficient resources on education for their children, passing the poverty problem to the next generation. Hence, we aimed to subsidize the education expenses of poor children in Hong Kong. We hope to help children to have a more comprehensive learning environment, enhance their development spaces, and improve the problem of intergenerational poverty.

To ensure nearly 100% of the donations could use on the relevant parties and organizations in need, the committee members in the organization are working on voluntarily basis. In order to avoid any unnecessary expenses, all the meetings and working places are held in different committee members’ office.

Our funds raised have successfully helped many people in need:
In the past, we helped the poor students in Mainland China to finish their university education. We supported the “College Dream Project” (「中國希望工程之圓夢行動」) and “Ten Percent Hope Community” (「十分關愛冷泉村青少年希望社區」). Other project such as “Ten Percent Learning Pregame”(「十分關愛學習計劃」) , set up “MPR Read and Fun” for five kindergartens, etc.

Now, we focus on helping underprivileged children in Hong Kong, and hope to provide a good learning environment and opportunities to them. The sponsored program include the “after-school support programs” and “Sprout of Life Program”. We cooperate with different organizations, which included “Young Men’s Christian Association of Hong Kong Cheung Sha Wan Centre” (香港基督教青年會長沙灣中心), “Martha Boss Lutheran Community Centre” (香港路德會包美達社區中心), “St. James’ Settlement” (聖雅各福群會), The Boys’& Girls’ Clubs Association Hong Kong (小童群益會), and so on. The service areas are located in Ho Man Tin, Sham Shui Po, Cheung Sha Wan, Tin Shui Wai and other places, which focus on providing after-school hosting services and special education services for the underprivileged children.

We hope to have more co-operations with other charity groups or organizations, and motivated more people to participate in the donation, to broaden the beneficiaries in the society.

Press Release

Robofest

Odyssey of the Mind
